Acknowledgements
The Distributed Learning Resource Center (DLRC) at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California provided salary support for the development of this web module. Some of this material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 0084279.
Pamela Endsley, formerly at DLRC, created the basic framework of the module, including the "splash" home page, the top panel frames and the navigation aids. She also designed the "mouse-over" highlights and the pop-up windows in the climate maps and many other features of this web module. Thanks for all your help Pam!
Arlene Guest from the DLRC provided extensive technical support, quality control and advice. She created the interactive icing prediction program and the interface to the interactive climate model, the latter requiring a substantial effort getting MATLAB to run interactively on the web.
General Information Section
Arctic and Antarctic satellite composites in the "welcome" page were from Columbia University, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) and the University of Wisconsin Madison, Antarctic Meteorology Research Center, respectively. "1998 SHEBA New Year" photograph is from the SHEBA Project Office, Univ. of Washington. "Iditarod Finish" at the end of the module is from the Anchorage Daily News.
Vessel Icing Section
I would like to thank the following individuals and organizations for allowing me to use their photographs of vessel icing free of charge.
Polar Low image in mitigation section was from the Tromso Satellite Station.
- Jerry Bielicki Jerry Bielicki Photographic Services, Marquette MI
- Edward Lozowski The Icing Group, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, The University of Alberta.
- James Overland National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL).
- Robert Pickart, George Tupper, Sarah Zimmerman and Oceanus Magazine Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Climate SectionThe climate data used in the interactive maps were made possible by the efforts of thousands of dedicated observers and technicians around the world. The final form of the data actually used was obtained from the following sources:
- Robert Hoare's World Climate web pages (Buttle and Tuttle Ltd.) provided the monthly temperature information for Russia, Scandinavia and coastal Greenland. This is copyrighted data and used with permission.
- The Meteorological Service of Canada web pages for Yukon, Nunavat and the Northwest Territories were used for the climate data in these regions.
- The Alaska Climate Research Center's great clickable map provided the Alaska climate data.
- Koni Steffen of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) provided AWS data data for interior Greenland.
- William Connolley created the very user-friendly The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) web sites where most of the Antarctic continental and ice shelf data were obtained.
- Charles Stearn's group, Antarctic Meteorology Research Center at the University of Wisconsin - Madison provided web pages and a "blue book" with data for a few stations not available at the BAS site.
- NOAA-CIRES Climate Diagnostics Center's web site provided access to the NCEP reanalysis project's "Surface Level" and "Sea Surface Temperature" fields that were used as a proxy for surface air temperature for the waters surrounding Antarctica. Thanks to Scott Woodruff for helping me find this data.
Proceed to vessel icing section.
