Caption: Basic meteorological parameters during the 1997 Knorr cruise. All quantities except sea surface temperature were measured from the forward "T" mast on the Knorr at an elevation of 23 m. Date were collected every second and averaged over 5 minutes. Note the high wind speeds, low temperatures, low humidity and frequent storms as indicated by the pressure dips. Winds directions were from the north and west quadrants for virtually the entire cruise, resulting in a continuous "cold-air outbreak" situation which resulted in extreme cooling of the ocean by the turbulent fluxes.
